Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

This image from our documentary links heavily with our poster and subject matter. The colours are very similar and therefore symbolise the same things - purity, calmness etc. as these are the things we try to show our audience to associate religion/Mormonism with.

The book of Mormon features heavily in our topic and is essential to our mise-en-scene. On the right is a screen shot of the opening of our documentary and on the left, one of our ancillary texts. These obviously link well. Although both books are different colours, we feel they still provide continuity as we used warm colours (blue and yellow) as they are symbolic of happiness, tranquility and peace; the exact association with religion that we strived to provide.

Audience theory
This is is to do with the effects our documentary has on its audience - normally with documentaries, especially expository ones, the effect is of a negative nature. However we strived for ours to have positive effect on both our audience and the Mormon community.

Reception theory
This is the meaning/message we strived to convey to our audience. We aimed to reflect a message that religion isn't all bad, and that the majority of religious individuals are not spiteful or extremists; that they are in-fact normal human beings.

Representation
The ideology of religion when it is in the media is normally that of a negative representation. That religious groups are threatening contemporary society and the way we function.

Counter-types
The opposite of stereo types. The religious stereotypes are of up-tight god fearing people who don't allow fun and think everyone but their own community is going to hell. Our documentary reveals strong counter-types as we represent the mormon community and young religious individuals as open minded, normal people who live very similar lives to everyone else.

Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Tuesday, 10 March 2015

5/2/2015-18/3/2015

During this time my group and I have been working on our evaluation. We planned out exactly what media (and how many types of media) we would use to answer each question and also planned in bullet points what we would write and include in each answer. We did all the questions together as we felt we all worked best in a team. We completed all of our evaluation questions and uploaded them to our blogs.

23/12/14-4/2/15

In this time my group and I have been editing our final documentary, we had the draft marked and made many improvements to the final piece. We added music transitions, time lapses amongst other things. We also planned and did research for our ancillary task which was to make three posters advertising our documentary and a double page spread about the documentary and the documentarian. We looked into many different types of TV magazines and advertising posters and analyzed them so we could see what we wanted to use in our own work. We also completed the ancillary tasks in this time and uploaded all the work to our blogs, we also uploaded our final documentary to youtube and have added that to our blogs as well.

Music choice and permission email.

A track we are interested in using for our documentary is 'we are done' by 'The Madden Brothers' we emailed their record label multiple times, unfortunately we didnt get a response.

Music choice and permission email.

we are also interested in using the song 'Geronimo' by band 'Sheppard'.
After emailing both their record label and press manager we unfortunately still got no response

Location.

We have 5 main locations where we shot our documentary - these places were deliberately chosen to create a specific atmosphere and set the scene. We didn't have any deliberate or specific props so it was important that our locations were memorable and effective.

Weybridge high-street
Most of our panning shots are of Weybridge high-street. We chose this location as it conveys a sense of normality, it shows a local place, suggesting to the audience that the subject matter is not out of the ordinary or an uncomfortable topic. We also want our audience to feel that our documentary is relevant to their everyday lives.

The Mormon Church in Addlestone
We wanted to use an actual Mormon church in our documentary, therefore we used shots of the nearest Mormon church in our area. This is used during the time lapse, it relevance is increased due to the narration of Mormon facts being played in a voice recording during the screen time.

School/the common room

This location was very convenient as it meant that we could do the shots in our lesson time. It is also a familiar place to encourage the message of Mormonism being very normal and natural to our audience. It creates a relatable and comfortable atmosphere.

Emily's kitchen
We chose to shoot Andy's (our Mormon) interview here. We felt this was appropriate as it is a normal and familiar place, further reassuring our audience of the normality of the documentary's topic. The location also provides a good background with soft, neutral colours; we felt this also symbolised tranquillity and a sense of comfortable normality.

Emily's bedroom

This was where we decided to film my interview. We agreed on this location as it was convenient, relevant and displayed a comfortable and familiar environment, not unlike the location of our Mormon Andy's interview.

Music choices and permission email.

The tracks by singer 'Birdy' are 'Tee Shirt' and 'Skinny Love'. We like the idea of using these songs as they are soft and mellow, gentle and would provide the uplifting atmosphere we want.
I emailed her manager to ask for permission. I sent this email multiple times, unfortunately i did not get a response.

Music choices and permission email.

We emailed the managers of the artists Lenka to ask permission to se her song, we emailed three times but ave still had no luck with a response.
We want to use her music (specifically her song "the show") as it is fast paced and upbeat and would fit
really well with the mood we are trying to create in the audience for our documentary.

Music choice and permission email.

For our documentary we are required to provide a non diegetic soundtrack. This of course will need to be suitable for our subject matter of Mormons and create the type of atmosphere
Tom Odell
The tracks that we are interested in using are by singer Tom Odell. These are 'Another Love' and 'Real Love'. We feel that these would interconnect with our documentary well, as they are soothing and gentle songs.

Unfortunately we have not had a response yet.

Music choices and permission email.

We emailed an artist named Lindsey Stirling, she is a female violinist who is also a full time Mormon so using her music would work perfectly in our documentary. Unfortunately we haven't had a response but we have tried emailing to three to three of her accounts (facebook page, website, email) and hopefully we will get a response as her music would really fit in with the documentary mood.

We want to use her music a it suits the "feel" of our documentary and will hopefully make the audience feel happy and create a good vibe about our subject matter.

UPDATE:

We had a response from Lindsey's assistant giving us permission to use her music.

Music choices and permission email.

We emailed the band Van Susans to ask to use their music in our documentary and we were lucky enough to get a response straight away so we can now use their music.

We wanted to use their music as most of their songs are up beat and catchy so would create the right atmosphere in our documentary.

27/09/2014-22/10/2014

During this time my group and I have been doing all our group work towards the planning of our final project (documentary). All of our research and planning is now completed and on our blogs. We have have researched documentarians and styles of documentaries, also planned what our documentary would be about and include, we also started filming and editing our documentary. We have completed storyboards, planned scripts, emailed our interviewees and auditioned for our documentarian.
